Killian's Circus Nursery

My original plan was to write this post in early December, but Killian surprised us by coming three weeks early. You may recognize the room as being Collin's former room. We decided to make the bigger room Collin's big boy room, seeing as how he'd actually be playing in there and, for now, Killian would just be sleeping in his room.

The paint color was formerly a pea green that did nothing for your completion or mood. It was nice to brighten the small space up with this lovely shade of grey by Behr called Dolphin Fin. I can't say enough about this grey. It's the perfect mix between cool and warm.

Since it's such a long room, there was room to keep a guest bed. I have to say, it's one of my favorite features of the nursery. A great spot to read, nurse the baby, fold baby clothes or take a cat nap. Furthermore, it gives us a place to house guests, should we need it. We'd just have K sleep in our room if we had people staying over.

I had originally thought about doing a lions and lambs theme, but ultimately decided going with a vintage circus theme would allow me to re-use a lot of Collin's zoo nursery items and then, down the road when they share a room, their themes could mesh well.

I found a book on Ebay called 100 Years of Circus Posters From Around the World for a total of $12 and framed a few prints. Can't beat vintage artwork for that price!

There is already another closet in the room, so I used this space as a changing nook. I snagged some cheap, wire locker baskets on ebay to story diapers and swaddling blankets. The vintage suitcases have been collected over the years.

Couldn't find a strongman print I liked, so I designed the one above. You can buy it, along with other vintage circus prints in my Etsy shop.

This shot  below was taken a day or two after we got home from the hospital. It perfectly showcases Collin's curiosity with his new brother!

Summer Inspiration

Well folks, there are many a DIY projects that I plan on tackling this summer before baby comes. For the nursery, you might ask? Yes m'am. These are so cute:

I think this mobile, or something similar, would be easy to make from all the fabric scraps I have accumulated over the years... Stay tuned!

The Best Laid Plans of Mice and Men... and Stephanie

Hey friends! It's been a while. Sorry for the silence. Life has actually been anything but silent on our end! We have just returned from a lovely week-long trip to visit Nick's fam in Chicago. Graduations, a bridal shower, household projects, wrapping things up at work, and actually getting to know people in our new neck of the woods have kept me away from the blogging world, but fear not! I'm back:)

So, you'll remember that just a few posts ago, I talked about doing a forest themed nursery for baby. Well, the adorable owl fabric I so loved for the crib bedding sold out and I was forced to move in another direction. You may be thinking, "I thought she was doing stripes and leaves for the bedding..." I was planning on that, but the owls won my heart, then broke my heart and now I have settled on a new theme that is, in my opinion, very fun.

Without further ado, I give you: The Zoo!

My mom is really excited about all things monkey for baby and I can't deny these little critters are a great launching point for the whole nursery. I sort of kind of also really, really love the fact that zoo is a broader theme than merely jungle or forest because you can incorporate animals from every habitat:)

Moda Central Park Zoo Animal Fabric

A few teasers for what is in store and what I hope to incorporate:

Zoo Animals, Set of 3 by Etsy seller happysquashtoys, $32

Morning Zoo Curtain Panels from The Land of Nod, $25-$45

Kay Bojensen Denmark 1959 Zoo Line Hippo Box from Etsy seller antiqueaddictions, $49

Happy Springtime Flag Banner by Etsy seller starlitnestgifts, $42

We are going to use this teal blue, mid-century chair (a $10 estate sale find from a while back) as the nursery rocker. It rocks quite nicely and adds some more vintage flair to the room!

As far as a rug for baby to crawl on goes, since we have hardwood floors throughout the house, and large rugs can be so expensive, my parents suggested going to a discount carpet warehouse type of place and asking them to bind and sell a large remnant piece for us. Brilliant! Has anyone ever done something like this? I'm curious to know if it ends up being a good deal.

That's all for now. Stay tuned as we put the nursery together!

A Little Forest for Little Bears...

Happy Wednesday folks. We are expecting some big storms in Georgia today and are currently under a tornado watch. Funny how that would have freaked this Pacific Northwestern gal out a few years ago, but my time living in Chicago and here has really mellowed my fears of possible natural disasters of this sort.

Baby is kicking up a storm and we are finally all settled into our new place. Stay tuned for a house tour, minus baby room, coming soon. I have yet to really start in on the nursery. We do, however, have a crib and a dresser, so that's progress!

Ever since we found out we were having a boy, I have been tossing around ideas for how to decorate the nursery. I really wanted to stay away from a theme, but lately a handful of woodland themed articles have warmed my heart. Some are way out of our price range, but the inspiration is good and I think hope, with a bit of creativity and elbow grease, I'll be able to pull off this look for much less!

Liam the Woodland Fox by Etsy seller sleepyking, $38

Faux Bois Lampshade from LampsPlus, $99

Elf Forest Playset by Etsy seller quietudequilts, $25

Vintage Yellowstone Park Souvenir Plate from Etsy seller designsforjustice, $7.50

Belchick the Mischevious Woodland Squirrel by Etsy seller sleepyking, $26

Large Blue Felt Cuckoo Clock by Etsy seller cuckoonest, $140

White Deer from Etsy seller amradio, $24

So that's that for now. Until next time, I leave you with a shot of our crib... It's just waiting for the arrival of one adorable little baby bear!

P.S. That is a 3-6 month sized bear suit. It looks big to me, but my mother was quick to point out that both of us are tall and so it's unlikely our baby will ever fit into the prescribed clothing for its age group... As long as I don't have to deliver a baby that big, I'll be okay:)

Sneak Peek...

So, we're getting there. Not totally unpacked, but about 75% done. I present to you this lovely shot of our un-finished, chaotic living room. Oddly enough (because I could have totally seen myself finishing this room first), it's going to be the last thing we wrap up. Stay tuned for a full house tour once curtains and pictures are up!

Other news on the homefront, my fabulous mother-in-law is making our baby's crib bumper and skirt. I'm really, really excited!

The plan (as of right now) is to decorate the nursery in aqua, orange, and yellow. That's "the plan," but really the nursery will be a sort of vintage-mish mash. I want to stay away from getting too matchy-matchy or themed. And, this way we'll be keeping all the major items pretty gender neutral and reusable for future bambinos. P.S. We find out if it's a girl or a boy on April 18th!

She has tasked me with selecting three fabrics and here are my top choices right now:
