Before and After: From Extra Large Master to Kid Bedroom/Playroom Combo

When we moved into our house, almost two years ago, we encountered lots of interesting paint colors, light fixtures and fans. This is the master bedroom in its original (or how we found it) state. It's an incredibly large room, roughly the same size as our living room. Things we loved about having it as a master were the fireplace, wrap around windows and large, double closet (something rare in a one hundred year old home). There were, however, drawbacks to keeping this as the master.

We mostly just sleep in our bedroom. All hanging-out occurs downstairs. It didn't make sense to have such a large chunk of the house for that sole purpose. Our basement is not finished, therefore, when we have our small group on Wednesday nights, there isn't a rec room for all ten kids to play in.

So, we decided to swap rooms with Collin and convert this room into a kids' bedroom/ playroom. Killian will eventually move in here with Collin and, heck, if we wanted to have eight kids, there would almost be enough room to line beds up on every wall, ala Annie or Madeline orphanage! ;)

Anyway, we moved Collin into the big room and, over time, have slowly brightened things up and made it kid-friendly. One of the first things that had to go was the garrish, poorly-painted red on the walls. Nick and his dad tackled this project after Christmas. We went with the same color we had in our Marietta, Ga living room-- Spring Melt by Martha Stewart. It's the perfect, pale minty-aqua-greeny-blue. So soothing and calming! Exactly what that room needed!

I apologize for the grainy iPhone pics! Someday I hope to properly photograph each room of our house, but until then, you get the picture!

I designed the 20x30" "Adventure Awaits" banner from a public domain Ansel Adams photograph of the Grand Tetons. If you are interested in something similar with a custom quote and a similar nature scene or more feminine, floral look. Let me know! I'm planning on listing these in my shop for $199. If it's not there, just convo me and I can make you a custom listing.

You'll see our trusty $5, 70's explosion reading chair is still a fixture! At some point in the future, I'll probably have it recovered, but in the mean time, it's still comfy and kitschy! The rug is a favorite from Ikea, our friend Mary snagged us the vintage chairs from a soon-to-be dumpster pile at the school where she works.

Nick made the chalkboard from a piece of sheet metal, framed it and painted it with chalkboard paint. It's fun to have the magnetic element and I worry less with the old fireplace covered! We aren't big fans of TV's in bedrooms, but it's worked out really nicely to have this one in here for when the brood of ten kiddos at small group start getting antsy and our sweet 10 and 12 year old baby sitters need to change up the activity.

So, that's that! The boys love playing in here. We love having this space for kids and it just makes more functional sense for our way of life! Someday, if we sell the house, we'll stage it as a master bedroom again. In the meantime, we don't miss having it for ourselves and our livable house space just got a whole lot bigger!

Collin's New Big Boy Room

We finally finished up Collin's big boy room. He loves it! I was prepared for the transition to big boy bed to be a long, hard road, but we are going on a month now and it has been relatively painless. He does a pretty good job of staying in bed at night. Getting up super early because of the daylight savings change... well that's another story, but I'm just happy to have the crib freed up for our second little bean who is due in six weeks! Crazy!

The nursery isn't finished, but I thought to share Collin's new room with you now.

What we originally had planned to be the nursery ended up being a much better room for Collin, due to its size and play space. Babies mostly just sleep and don't do a lot of freestyle playing in their rooms for the first year anyways and Collin's room would be a good place for his brother to move into if we have more kids in the future.

So, do you remember the electric blue walls and the gaudy crystal chandelier ceiling mounted fixture in this room? My eyes water just thinking about it! I've searched high and low and can't find an original photo of the room. Bummer. It's fun to compare, but you'll just have to imagine it.

Without further ado, I bring you Collin's new big boy room!

We decided to stick with his zoo theme, but grow it up a bit. I had lots of fun scavenging thrift stores and antique malls for fun, vintage touches.

Nick, my handyman extraordinaire husband, built Collin's big boy bed. He did such a great job. I'm so proud of him! He built it so that he can easily make another, identical bed to serve as a future bunk bed for our two boys. I'm excited to think of the stories and fun memories they'll have in these beds-- making pirate ships, hanging Christmas lights from the headboard, most likely throwing their smelly gym bags under the bed. Good times ahead!

I love me some gingham and I love the robin's egg blue gingham duvet I found on Land of Nod!

The retro-tastic chair was a $5 thrift store find. I put up a picture of it on Instagram when I was debating whether or not to buy it and the response was mixed. Ultimately, I decided we couldn't lose by springing the $5 and taking it home. It was in pretty good shape and just ugly enough to be kind of fabulous, in my opinion. Someday we'll either reupholster it or swap it out, but for now, it's a really comfy story chair.

Collin's cubby, also built by Daddy, makes a reappearance. It's not as full as usual, seeing as how many of his toy baskets end up migrating downstairs to the living room. ;)

I used a mixture of vintage finds and vintage heirloom books in his open shelving. The Three Little Puppies and Town Mouse Country Mouse were originally my dad's and the My Goodnight Book was mine when I was a little girl.

Here is Collin's reading nook and below, Collin reading in his reading nook. The yellow wall shelf is a former church pew rack.

Sweet boy is already wearing his 3T Christmas jammies. I just hope they still fit him in a month when it's actually Christmas time!

Summer Inspiration

Well folks, there are many a DIY projects that I plan on tackling this summer before baby comes. For the nursery, you might ask? Yes m'am. These are so cute:

I think this mobile, or something similar, would be easy to make from all the fabric scraps I have accumulated over the years... Stay tuned!

Vintage Style Children's Rooms

My marketing job is on a school calendar and so I have summers off. This summer, I thought I would be a great idea to take a nanny job and make some extra cashola. It's been a lot of hard work and a lot of fun so far. I'm watching a set of three year old twins (boy and girl), a five year old girl, and sometimes helping out with a newborn baby boy. Needless to say, I'm quite tired by the end of the week. Hats off to 24/7 parents!

I just have to share some of the funny things they say (through tears), when I *gasp* put them down for their naps. "Mommy!!!!" "Daddy!!!" "Athena (dog)!" "Grandmaaaaa!!!" "I not tired!" "Open the door!!!!" "My fwoat (throat) is broken!!!!" and other random, contrary expressions like: "I'm nothing!!!" "I hate the horse book!" and on and on. After a few minutes things get quite and I take a peek in their rooms to find they have surrendered to their exhaustion-- totally cashed out, asleep.

Having no children of our own yet, it feels funny to write a blog post about kid rooms, but there are just so many adorable options out there and many of you, my dear readers, are parents... perhaps needing a bit of inspiration in that area. So, here are a few pics of lovely rooms and fun ideas:

Cover of "Children's Rooms Stockholm" by Jeu de Pomme. How cute is the vintage baby pram?

Fun vintage ring toss games! I think vintage dart boards would also look stellar in an older child's room. source

Oh this is a room after my own heart. Love these colors and the hoop wall art! source

Vintage flash cards and pages from vintage books (framed or hanging on a clothesline, as pictured) source.

"Bonne Nuit," so sweet. source

Very clever! Amanda Soule, of Soule Mama, found this armoire on the side of the road and tacked fabric to the inside where it was missing glass.

Great room for a tween girl. source

This alpentine bedroom is so cute! Love the 70's wall mural. source
