Easy DIY's with Fabric Scraps

Admit it. You have a big bag of fabric and fabric scraps that you keep "meaning to do something with." My bag o' scraps grows almost weekly. It's a real problem. Garage sales, thrift shops, and the fabric store (of course) relentlessly taunt me with their beautiful textiles and patterns. I succumb to a vintage gingham in blue or perky seersucker in kelly green. My failure to actually use some of the swatches is partially due to the fact that I secretly fear messing up a project and ruining the fabric forever! Here are a few projects that have me inspired to A. Be brave and do something with my stash, and B. learn to sew.

6. DIY Fabric Hoop Wall Art (I have these all over my office wall. Love 'em!)

I Heart Hoop Wall Art

There is, perhaps, no better way to display lovely, vintage fabric than to stretch it on to an embroidery hoop, add embelishments (vintage buttons, jewelry, embroidery, appliques, etc) and hang it on your wall. Here are a few examples from my own home:

I have plenty of extra fabric and vintage buttons, so all of these hoops can also be purchased in my shop:)

Check out a tutorial here.

These are a few hoop wall art groupings that have me itching to make more!

Ideas for your own hoop wall art:

- Vintage screenprinted t-shirts, perhaps a sentimental scrap of fabric from one of Grandpa's old shirts
- Upholstry squares (they are cheap and the perfect size--not to mention durable)
- Chalkboard oilcloth fabric (purchase here) for writing notes!
-Vintage curtains, sheets, or pillowcases offer super fun and funky patterns (especially barkcloth!)

Embellish with:

-Vintage buttons (easy to find at flea markets or in Gram's sewing basket)
-Criscrossed ribbon (ala french memo board) and insert photos and ticket stubs!
-Cutout appliques-- cut out a heart, flower, or any other shape from fabric, rustically stitch it
to the canvas and leave a bit of room to insert batting before you stitch it up
(it makes for an adorable 3-D hoop)
-Vintage jewelry (clip the posts off of large, round earings and hot glue on to fabric,
affix a strand of beads or faux pears to the rim of the hoop)
-Silhouette cutouts, in black or contrasting fabric, of your loved ones or favorite shapes

Feel free to comment with your own ideas for hoop wall art decor!

My $7 Entryway Makeover

So, yesterday I ventured out to run an errand and found myself lured by the fluorescent garage and estate sale signs on many a street corner in Marietta. What a delight to have scored a bundle of beautiful vintage upholstry fabric for $1, a pale blue bulletin board for $1 and the best..... A 1940's (possibly older) Royal Typewriter for $5. I know! How wonderful is that?! The gentleman hosting the garage sale didn't want to haul it in his move, so it was a win-win situation.

"A British Woven Union Linen Screen Print" is written across the bottom of the fabric panels.

I rushed home and gathered a few items I already owned, plus my new finds and made over our entry way. To affix the linen to the bulletin board, I used brass upholstry nails (they run you about $2 at a hardware store).

Voila! And only for $7... I am a happy woman:)
